Contract or Permanent Developer: How to Choose

Contract or Permanent Developer: How to Choose

October 16, 2026 · By JobDisrupt

The choice is usually about how long the work lasts and how much the knowledge needs to stay in the company.

Choose contract when

  • The work has an end date, such as a launch, a migration or an audit.
  • You need a skill the team does not have and will not need again.
  • You want cover while you recruit a permanent hire.

Choose permanent when

  • The product will need the same person for years.
  • The system is complex and hard to hand over.
  • You are building a team culture, not finishing a project.

Common mistakes

Using contractors for core work with no handover. When the contract ends, the knowledge leaves with them. Ask for documentation and a handover period in the terms.

Hiring permanently for a six-week problem. It costs more and the person may be bored by month three.

Treating contract as a shortcut. A contractor still needs access, a clear brief and someone to review their work.

A hybrid is common: start with a contract, and agree up front that you can convert to a permanent role if it works for both sides.
